Robert Longo – Perfect Gods
Robert Longo – Perfect Gods

Robert Longo (American, b. 1953) is an internationally recognized visual artist known for his large-scale works in various media: drawing, sculpture, film, performance and music. Longo attended State University College in Buffalo, where he met Cindy Sherman; together, they moved to New York City in 1977. The same year, Longo participated in a five-person show entitled Pictures—curated by Douglas Crimp at Artists Space in New York — the first exhibition to contextualize a young group of artists who were turning away from Minimalism and Conceptualism and instead towards image-making, inspired by newspapers, advertisements, film, and television. Over the next decade Longo became known as a leading protagonist of the “Pictures Generation,”  making provocative critiques of the anaesthetizing and seductive effects of capitalism, mediatized wars, and the cult of history in America.

Longo has exhibited extensively at museums throughout Europe, Asia and the United States, including such venues as the Venice Biennale, Documenta, and the Whitney Biennial. His work is represented in numerous major museums and private collections all over the world, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York City; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The Broad, Los Angeles; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and the Tate, London. Robert Longo lives and works in New York and is represented by Metro Pictures, NYC; Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, London, Paris, Salzburg; and Capitain Petzel, Berlin.
