José Capaz

José Gabriel Capaz (Havana, Cuba, 1988) is a Cuban artist who specializes in painting. Born in 1988 in Havana, Cuba, José graduated from the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts (2010) and attended the University of the Arts, ISA (Instituto Superior de Arte) in Havana between 2011 and 2015. José was one of the three members of the Havana based collective known as STAINLESS (2010-2017). In 2017, José continued a solo career in Havana, where he lives and works.

The artist's work is represented by Mestre Projects in The Bahamas and Servando Art Gallery, in Havana; where he had his first major solo exhibition titled 'The Removal’ in’ December 2021. Capaz has been awarded in 2022 by the prestigious Vermont Studio Center in Vermont, USA.

During the 11th (2012) and 12th (2015) editions of the Havana Biennial, the artist participated in major public projects. Capaz has held several solo shows in Havana at spaces like Casa de México, and has exhibited collectively at the Freies Museum Berlin, Berlin; The 8th Floor Gallery, Brooklyn, New York; Robert Miller Gallery, New York; Gare Saint Sauveur and Lille, France amongs others.

He has received grants from the Shelley &Donald Rubin Foundation, New York (2014) and The Rockefeller Brothers Fund, New York (2017). Capaz entered the collection of the ICA Miami Institute of Contemporary Arts in 2022.

The artist's work is in private and public collections around the world, including: the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation Collection, New York, USA; the Gilbert Brownstone Foundation Collection, Paris, France; The Chrysler Museum Collection, Virginia, USA; and the Virginia Museum Collection, Virginia, USA, Institute of contemporary art (ICA)Miami, USA, Foundation Casa Wabi, Oaxaca, México.
